Question by Mir A: What can be done to control the prices of consumer items in the international market?
Higher prices of consumer commodities mostly hit the poor countries more acutely. Therefore, some sort of control will benefit the majority of the people in the world who are poor. Instead of numerous charity works through hundreds of NGOs should not we investigate the possibilities of controlling prices of consumes commodities internationally, since the world is a global city now.
***** Is it possible to evolve a mechanism of susidising on selective basis for countries in need ?
Best answer:
Answer by John H
The problem with controlling the economy at an international level is that there is no government to enforce regulations. The UN is comparatively helpless as a law enforcer – the worst it can do is enforce sanctions and that will defeat the spirit of the policies in the first place.
Consumer goods are at an equilibrium level – the price is set by the mechanics of supply and demand. If you were to forcefully low the price somehow, to “benefit” poorer countries, the response would simply be a GLOBAL greater demand. And when demand exceeds supply, they call it a shortage. People with the means to obtain the goods would be the ones in nations with superior infrastructure, and that small stream of supplies to poor countries would dry up. You are right to draw an analogy to a global “city”. Drop the price of hamburgers in a city to 2 cents, and see if the poor benefit. Fact is, they probaly would be worse off.

BBB Welcomes White House Recognition of Self-Regulation in Protecting Consumer Online Privacy
Posted on 2/23/2012 by
Arlington, VA – At today’s White House meeting to launch its new Privacy Initiative, the Obama Administration recognized the importance of accountable industry self-regulation in providing consumers with essential privacy protections. The Council of Better Business Bureaus’ (CBBB) Online Interest-Based Advertising Accountability Program has been at the center of industry self-regulatory efforts to enforce provision of transparency and consumer choice.
C. Lee Peeler, President and CEO of the National Advertising Review Council and CBBB Executive Vice President, and Genie Barton, CBBB Vice President and Director of the Accountability Program, joined other privacy leaders at today’s invitation-only White House event. Barton welcomed the Administration’s recognition of the importance of accountability programs in the self-regulatory process. “The objective oversight provided by the BBB Accountability Program is critical to success. This partnership between the online advertising industry and BBB, working closely with the Federal Trade Commission, is a great example of how industry self-regulation can and should work.”
In his remarks at the White House event, FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz commended BBB and the industry leaders who created the Accountability Program. “Today we are proud to report that a powerful group of leaders has come together to respond to our call…the online advertising industry has been working to develop an icon that consumers could click to opt out of receiving targeted ads. Today, although it is still a work in progress, the ad industry has obtained buy-in from companies that deliver 90 percent of online behavioral advertisements; and, with the Better Business Bureau, it has established a mechanism with teeth to address non-compliance, backed up with FTC enforcement.”
The BBB Accountability Program enforces industry consensus principles that provide consumers with greater transparency and control over the use of their browsing history across websites for targeted advertising and other purposes. Any business or organization that collects data on a non-affiliated website (such as ad networks, data aggregators, website publishers and advertisers) is subject to the Accountability Program’s oversight.
To ensure compliance, the Accountability Program monitors industry’s online practices and launches inquiries when it appears that a company may not be complying with the industry consensus standards, then works to bring the company into compliance. It publishes all its decisions to ensure transparency and accountability. In cases of non-compliance or non-participation, the program refers the company to the FTC.
The BBB Accountability Program has been invited to participate in the multi-stakeholder working group, convened by the Department of Commerce to implement the White House “Privacy Bill of Rights.” The first call will take place today.

Q&A: What type of consumer protection should the government have in place concerning credit cards?
Question by Jacquot- Un chat furieux: What type of consumer protection should the government have in place concerning credit cards?
It seems to me like the interest rates that they charge are absolutely unbelievable. Especially when they slip it past someone on page 28 of their “rights” package.
However, I wonder about the public’s lack of financial education and how much responsibilty a person has to take for their own actions.
I’m taking an economics course now and it seems like, when reading the basics of capitalism, that a lot of it really seems to depend on consumer’s being rather, frankly, dumb.
Does the Government have a place in “protecting” people, or is this really an example of “buyer beware”?
Best answer:
Answer by Sicilian
I don’t believe the government has a place in protecting people from themselves. You can’t be free if you aren’t free to make mistakes.
